Before They Wake

Best of On the Go 2026: Strollers, Car Seats, Carriers and Diaper Bags

The strollers, car seats, carriers and diaper bags worth your money in 2026, picked for real life: subway stairs, walk-ups, cabs and tiny trunks.

Most stroller reviews are written for people with a garage. This one is for anyone who has stood at the bottom of the subway stairs doing math about a 27-pound stroller and an 8-pound baby.

We sorted everything by how you actually move. If you drive everywhere, the big full-size strollers make sense. If you live in a fourth-floor walk-up, weight and fold matter more than suspension. Prices are from October 2026 and change constantly, partly because of tariffs, so check before you buy.

Full-size strollers

Stroller Price Weight Width open Fold
UPPAbaby Cruz V3 $900 26.5 lb 22.5” Two hands
UPPAbaby Vista V3 $1,000 27.6 lb 25.7” One step, stands on its own
Mockingbird Single 3.0 $475 27 lb One hand, stands on its own

UPPAbaby Cruz V3 (best overall). The seat lies flat from birth, so you can skip the $200-plus bassinet. Then there’s the width: at 22.5 inches it gets through restaurant aisles, elevator doors and the narrow entry of a prewar building more easily than the Vista. The downsides are the price, a two-hand fold and a heavy folded frame. You won’t be carrying it up subway stairs. It suits you best with an elevator, a car or a ground-floor entrance.

UPPAbaby Vista V3 (best if you’re planning a second baby). The Vista’s trick is growth. Add a RumbleSeat or PiggyBack and it carries up to three kids. The bassinet comes in the box, the basket holds about 30 pounds, and resale value is strong, which takes some sting out of $1,000. At 25.7 inches it’s the widest stroller here, and a PureWow reviewer who used it for nine months found the brake pedal sometimes sticks.

Mockingbird Single 3.0 (best value). About half the price of the UPPAbabys, with all-wheel suspension, a magnetic buckle, a one-hand fold and a lifetime warranty. New this year is a pull-out sun shield for the legs. It works with more than 40 infant car seats. It’s heavy when folded, and the handlebar rotates instead of extending, so tall parents can end up kicking the crossbar.

Worth a look: the new UPPAbaby Kona ($650) is a mid-size stroller that folds one-handed to 21 inches wide and lies flat from birth. It’s shipping now. We’ll review it once we’ve had our hands on one.

Travel and compact strollers

Stroller Price Weight Folded size
Joolz Aer2 $494 14.5 lb 20.8 × 17.5 × 9.3”
Bugaboo Butterfly 2 $499 16 lb 17.6 × 9.6 × 21.8”
UPPAbaby Minu V3 $500 16.7 lb 10 × 18 × 21.5”

Joolz Aer2 (best overall). It folds in about a second with one hand, so you can do it while holding the baby or your coffee. The shoulder strap means hands-free stairs, and it fits in an overhead bin. Babesta, a New York baby store, calls it the city’s favorite. The basket is small and the handlebar doesn’t adjust. If you bought the car seat adapters, check them: Joolz recalled the Aer2 adapter set in June 2026 because the seat may not lock in. The stroller itself wasn’t recalled.

Bugaboo Butterfly 2 (best ride). It’s 1.5 pounds heavier than the Aer2. In exchange you get larger wheels, a 17.6-pound basket and suspension that Mother&Baby’s testers rated best in class. Its seat back is tall enough for a big four-year-old. It faces forward only, and the rain cover and car seat adapters cost extra.

UPPAbaby Minu V3 (best as an everyday stroller and a travel stroller). The Minu has the biggest basket and canopy of this group, which matters if this is your only stroller. Reviewers find the fold inconsistent and one-handed pushing hard.

Bombi Bēbee V3 (best budget). New for 2026 at $225. It weighs 18 pounds and takes kids up to 55 pounds.

Infant car seats

From December 5, 2026, every car seat sold in the US for kids under 40 pounds has to pass the new federal side-impact test, FMVSS 213a. Seats you already own are fine if they aren’t expired or recalled.

Seat Price Carrier weight Baby limits Extras
Chicco KeyFit Max ClearTex $200–250 ~10 lb 4–30 lb, to 32” Anti-rebound bar, no-rethread headrest
UPPAbaby Aria V2 $450 6 lb 4–30 lb, to 30” Load leg, FAA-certified
Nuna PIPA rx $550 7.6 lb 4–32 lb, 16–32” Rigid LATCH base, load leg

Chicco KeyFit Max (best overall). It’s easy to install and fits small newborns well, and it’s slim enough for three seats across a back row. The carrier is heavy at around 10 pounds, which you’ll notice by the third block.

UPPAbaby Aria V2 (lightest). At 6 pounds it’s the lightest infant seat on the market, and it’s FAA-certified for flights. It only clicks into UPPAbaby strollers, and its 30-inch height limit means some babies outgrow it sooner.

Nuna PIPA rx (best splurge). The base has a load leg and an anti-rebound panel, and the fabrics are free of flame retardants. The harness has to be rethreaded by hand as the baby grows, and it’s hard to clean.

If you ride in cabs and Ubers a lot, look at a baseless seat that installs with the car’s belt or built-in LATCH in seconds. The Joie Mint ($300) is the cheapest. The Nuna PIPA urbn installs in about two seconds, but it’s only sold in a travel system ($800 with the TRVL lx stroller). The Doona+ ($550) is a car seat with wheels that fold out, which parents love for car-free city life. It weighs 17.2 pounds, though, and has no basket. A quick note on the law: NYC yellow cabs and for-hire cars are exempt from car seat rules, and kids under 7 can legally ride on your lap. Every car seat safety expert will still tell you to bring the seat, and drivers have to let you install it.

Convertible car seats

Seat Price Seat weight Rear-facing limit FAA
Graco Extend2Fit 3-in-1 $270 20–22 lb 50 lb Yes
Nuna RAVA Next $580 26.4 lb 50 lb Yes
Cosco Scenera Next $35–60 under 7 lb 40 lb Yes

Graco Extend2Fit 3-in-1 (best overall). A panel slides out to give up to 5 extra inches of legroom, so kids can stay rear-facing longer. That’s what the AAP recommends. It did well in BabyGearLab’s crash testing and turns into a booster up to 100 pounds. It’s wide, the harness is hard to tighten, and it fits newborns poorly. Use your infant seat first.

Nuna RAVA Next (best splurge). Updated for 2026 with more side-impact protection, a calf rest that extends, and magnetic holders that keep the buckle out of the way. It’s big and heavy, so check it fits your car.

Cosco Scenera Next (best for travel and cabs). At under 7 pounds, it’s the convertible you can carry through an airport. It’s hard to install rear-facing and kids outgrow it at 40 pounds. As a second seat for trips and taxis, nothing beats it at around $50.

Baby carriers

In a city, a carrier often gets more use than the stroller in the first few months. Stairs stop mattering when the baby’s on your chest.

Carrier Price Baby weight Carry positions
Ergobaby Omni Deluxe $219 7–45 lb Front in, front out, hip, back
Solly Baby Wrap $74 8–25 lb Front, facing in
WildBird Linen Ring Sling $74 Newborn–35 lb Front, hip, back

Ergobaby Omni Deluxe (best overall). One carrier from newborn to toddler, with breathable mesh and a detachable storage pouch. Back carry takes practice, and the shoulder straps are on the thin side.

Solly Baby Wrap (best for newborns). A thin, stretchy modal wrap that stays cool in a July heat wave. You’ll be wrapping about five and a half yards of fabric, and most people need a few tries to get it right. It’s less supportive once the baby passes about 15 pounds.

WildBird Ring Sling (best for quick errands). On and off in seconds, which suits a run to the bodega. It comes in sizes and takes practice.

Safety: in 2026 the CPSC warned parents to stop using several cheap carriers sold on Amazon, including Yemkezo, because of fall risks. Stick to brands that state they meet the federal standard for soft carriers.

Diaper bags

Bag Price Best for
Skip Hop Forma Next Backpack $73–77 Every day
Citymouse Park Bag Crossbody $66 Packing light
BEIS Travel Ultimate Diaper Backpack $198 Long days and flights

Skip Hop Forma Next (best overall). A wide opening, an insulated cube, a changing mat, stroller straps and a bottle pocket that fits a 30-ounce tumbler. The packing cubes are small.

Citymouse Park Bag (best crossbody). Diapers, wipes, a bottle and your phone, worn across the body so both hands are free. It’s machine-washable. A full pack of wipes takes up most of the inside.

BEIS Travel Ultimate (best for heavy packers). It has a fold-down changing station and a detachable fanny pack, and it fits everything. It also weighs about 3 pounds empty and is too big for a walk to the park.
